DocSIG Journal Study: Six Top Marketing Journals 2000-2007
This study examines the publishing history of marketing
departments and authors from January 2000 through December 2007. The
biographical information for each article was examined to identify the
affiliation of the authors.
The purpose of this study is to guide doctoral students in their application
process. One of the most common questions asked by marketing doctoral students
is "How do I know where to send my vita? What will be their research
expectations?" This study, as did its predecessor by Joe Cote, helps guide
students with this query. Assistant professors can also use the study as a
benchmark for promotion and review.
Joe Cote's study titled “Institutional Productivity in 9 Major Journals From
1984-1999” (click here for the link to the DocSIG
web page) was a reference the DocSIG officers would often direct marketing
doctoral students to review. Since this is a question we encounter often, an
update was in order.
Data was collected from the following journals between 2000 and 2007:
Journal of Marketing
Journal of Marketing Research
Journal of Consumer Research
Marketing Science
Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science
Journal of Retailing
Marketing departments represent only the affiliations listed in the published
journal article. No attempt was made to adjust the data for faculty who have
changed departments over time. The departments represented were then coded,
with 1 count given to each institution represented. If multiple authors were
from the same institution, the institution received only 1 count. There was no
penalty for co-authorship, so when an article was written by two professors at
different institutions, each institution received a count of 1 for that article.
Although desirable, this study does not adjust for faculty size nor does this
study account for lead authorship. If you are interested in further analysis
with the data, please email Daniel M Ladik for the raw data. Readers are
welcome to use this data for internal purposes. Other use of this data requires
the permission of the author (dladik@suffolk.edu)
and citation of the source of the data.
